Project Steering Group outline the rationale driving the development of Technological University of South East Ireland

  • A university will be a key driver for socio-economic change in the region driving innovation, facilitating start-up entrepreneurs and assisting the scale-up of larger enterprises.
  • The University will increase choice for students from the South East. More will remain to study. It will also attract more students from other regions nationally. This will increase the intellectual capital of the South East.
  • A university in the region will assist in attracting high quality FDI investment into the region. It will assist existing industries in attracting and retaining high quality and specialist senior staff.
  • University status will provide the new entity with the ability to provide greater alignment with business and industry in the region. The university will offer a broader portfolio of programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
  • The university will stimulate greater economic activity in the region that will facilitate greater employment opportunities and career paths for graduates.
  • The university will be a more attractive offer to international students and staff seeking education or a career in Ireland.
  • The university with presence across the region will facilitate a new regional identity and communal bond and support the drive for growth in a coherent and supportive way across the region.
  • University status will allow the new entity to expand research and innovation activity significantly, thereby attracting increased external funding and investment for the region.
  • The current development stage of both Institutes has reached a stage where their development is being hindered by their current legislative frameworks.
